Conservative Party Conference: Boris Johnson, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Michael Bloomberg speeches; ENGLAND: Lancashire: Blackpool: INT Boris Johnson MP (Conservative: Henley) speech SOT - (To tumultous applause) Thank you / We've only got eight minutes! / I am proud to be standing to be your candidate as Mayor of London and proud to be given the chance to represent the greatest city on earth / but what gives me the greatest pride of all is that from day one when we launched our campaign / we have provoked such gibbering squeals of denunciation from King Newt [ie Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London) and his allies that I know they are scared / and know that they can see all too clearly that we Conservatives are launching a fightback in London / and that we will recapture the capital for common sense government for the first time in a generation / And when people ask me / are you serious about this? / I tell them that I can think of nothing more serious than the security and prosperity of the powerhouse of the British economy / whose magnitute and diversity and whose booming service industries / a highly unfashionable point to make but I make it nonetheless / are the best possible vindication of the revolutions brought in by Conservative governments in the last 30 years / That's why in the last weeks and months I have been travelling throughout the boroughs of London / all 32 boroughs and the Corporation of London on a Routemaster bus / which I have sometimes been driving myself / provoking some of my passengers to quite unnecessary alarm / And in the hundreds of miles I travelled I have met hundreds of people who have offered me all sorts of opinions about me / not all of them are fit for repetition / and of all the conversations I had the one that sticks in my mind was with a 14 year old young offender in Wandsworth who looked me in the eye and said in the tones of one who knows all there is to know about growing up on the streets of London / The trouble is the...
