POLITICS / EDUCATION : Conservative Party Conference 2011: Michael Gove speech; Gove speech (without script) SOT
- Nick Gibb is a passionate reader. Introducing systematic synthetic phonics reading tool. Gibb also leading campaign for reading for pleasure. Am grateful for his crusading zeal. Talks about the CarpetRight warehouse in Tottenham being ablaze and how the owner Phil Harris (Lord Harris of Peckham) has taken over educational academies from local authorities in south London making a great success of them. Speaks about northern skills that have been transformed by new headteachers and their establishment of academies. These people went through the school system set up by Ken Baker, one of the best education secretaries this country has ever seen. A visionary informer who inspires us today. Hope that we can close the gap (between technical and academic) that has existed educationally in Britain since the Second World War. For far too long the technical, craft and apprenticeship route has been undervalued. Want marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar. Want exams that will reward rigour. Want to enhance and support the reputation of teachers. Am pleased that money has been made avaialble for maths and science busaries. Fortunate that the UK has so many good schools and teachers. Will not rest until EVERY school in thsi country is as good as the best. I'm not going to leave until every child from a poor home has the same opportunities that are enjoyed by the most fortunate in our society. I would never acept second best for my child. I will never accept second best for this country.
