AV Tops of House - pan down to Reginald Bosanquet: MS:
"The tenth Commonwealth PM's conference begins in Lancaster House tomorrow. Under the chairmanship of Mr Harold Macmillan. It will last a week to ten days. All eleven Commonwealth PM's are attending although Dr Nkrumah of Ghana will be late. He's at the United Nations. Archbishop Makarios of Cyprus will probably be joining them towards the end".
CMS Bosanquet: "Discussing international affairs, thats disarmament, nuclear tests, Congo, the United Nations, Britains ties with Europe, that kind of thing. Then over the weekend they'll break up for informal talks and next weekend they will get down to the subject which is overshadowing the whole conference, South Africa".
Zoom into CMS: "At least seven of the PM's are bitterly opposed to Doctor Verwoerds policy of aparthied. After all six of them have coloured skins themselves and in South Africa they wouldn't even be allowed into the same restaurant as Dr Verwoerd but it would be a mistake to imagine that this conference will come to a decision on South Africa, that is not the way these meetings work, theres no formal voting just a polite communique at the end and the British government has indicated that it would like to keep the South Africa on the shelf for the time being. But talking to the Prime Minister's as they arrived I got the impression that many of them are prepared to be very outspoken on the subject once the conference is over".
INT
CU Jawaharlal Nehru (Prime Minister of Pakistan): (Dr Verwoerd when he arrived described apartheid as a policy of good neighbourliness, is that description acceptable to you?) "I shouldn't like to be Dr Verwoerd's neighbour that's all I can say". Laughter
