Colorful Nudibranchs Mating - HD stock video
Close up of two nudibranchs mating on the sea floor. These colorful green, black and red nudibranchs are called the "Variable Neon Slug" or "Dusky Nembrotha". The color pattern may be quite variable. Their latin name is Nembrotha kubaryana also known as Nembrotha nigerrima. This marine mollusk is native to the tropical Western Indo-Pacific, and these two were filmed off Balicasag Island, Philippines. Nudibranchs are hermaphrodites, and after they exchange eggs and sperm, as they are doing here, each one will lay eggs after mating. They are about three inches long, which is relatively large for a nudibranch! These are the natural colors, with no color editing or cropping! These sea slugs eat sea squirts (ascidians), which contain toxins. The nudibranchs defend themselves by secreting the sea squirt toxin in their own mucus.
