Leaders of FARC guerrilla admit their responsibility for mass kidnappings in Colombia

BOGOTA, COLOMBIA - JUNE 21: Colombia’s war crimes tribunal JEP on Tuesday (June 21) started hearing former commanders of the defunct guerrilla group FARC (the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) in the Colombian capital over the kidnapping of more than 20,000 people. JEP, a court that was set up after left-wing FARC guerrillas signed a peace deal with the government in 2016, has accused members of Colombia’s army of being part of the “false positives” scandal in which civilians were murdered by members of the army. During the hearing, seven former leaders of FARC who are still alive, led by the last commander, Rodrigo Londoño, acknowledged their responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity, related to the kidnapping of people. Former FARC members Julian Gallo (Carlos Antonio Lozada), Jorge Torres, (Pablo Catatumbo), Ricardo Gonzalez, (Rodrigo Granda), Milton de Jesus Toncel (Joaquin Gomez), Jaime Alberto Parra, (Mauricio Jaramillo), Jose Lisandro Lascarro (Pastor Alape), Rodrigo Londono (Timchenko) also attended the hearing. Rodrigo Londono, also known as “Timechenko”, the director of FARC when the group demobilized in 2017, allegedly ordered to kidnap and kill members of the security forces while in charge of the guerrilla organization. Londono assumed their collective responsibility in the face of one of the most abominable crimes committed by their organization. “The result of a policy that led to crimes against humanity going against the values that inspired our struggle,” he said during the hearing. He stated that the guerilla carried out violent acts under the pretext of a humanitarian action capturing the adversary in the middle of the conflict, respecting his life with the idea of exchanging them for members of FARC - a leftist rebel group that waged war with the Colombian government for more than 50 years.
