Colombia's flower fields prepare for Valentine's Day sales

SESQUILE, COLOMBIA - FEBRUARY 8: Carnation crop workers have been working hard to fulfill the sales for Valentine's Day in Flores La Aldea, in the municipality of Sesquile, Colombia. The sales of this very special date represent between 10 and 15% of the total sales of the year of all the crops that are dedicated to the export of flowers that meet the highest standards set by the industry. This is added the importance that it has as a source of work for many families in municipalities in Colombia, since many women heads of households find in this job an opportunity to help their children get ahead and give them better opportunities in life. “Of 250 employees, 70% are women from neighboring municipalities, they find in this a great job opportunity and develop their life,†said Fernando Pena, Project Manager of Flores La Aldea Company. One of the workers of the company Paola Betancourt also underlined that growth has filled her with a lot of motivation. “I like what I do here, I like this process, I want to continue working here because I have a son and I want to give him the best,†she added.
