Belgium's retired tanksgain value as they can be supplied to Ukraine

TOURNAI, BELGIUM - FEBRUARY 03: Belgium's Leopard 1 tanks, which were decommissioned from the country's military forces over a decade ago and sold to a defense industry firm, have recently been a subject of discussion in the country. The government is evaluating the possibility of purchasing the tanks back from the company at a reasonable cost to send them to Ukraine, however, a conclusion has not been reached yet. The Belgian army had retired the Leopard 1 tanks from their ground troops about 10 years ago and decided to cease usage of tracked heavy tanks, thus leading to their sale to the firm, "OIP Land Systems." With the escalation of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Western nations are ramping up their support to Ukraine, and the Belgian government has raised the issue of the decommissioned tanks in light of the scarcity of tanks that can be sent as aid. An interesting controversy has arisen between the company currently holding the tanks, which are housed in large hangars near the French border in the city of Tournai, and the Belgian government. This controversy was subsequently reported in the media. (Footage by Dursun Aydemir /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
