Azeem Rafiq (Former Yorkshire cricketer) interview SOT
Q: ARE YOU CONVINCED THERE ARE PLAYERS STILL GOING THROUGH WHAT YOU'VE BEEN GOING THROUGH
- Up to yesterday, without a doubt, I'd hope after yesterday there's going to be a complete change in mindset / up to yesterday I have no doubt whatsoever / I've received messages and I appreciate them, but at the same time these people have known for the last year what my grievances have been / positive is I see that as progress that finally people are listening
Q: ARE CURRENT PLAYERS, FORMER PLAYERS COMING TO YOU AND EXPRESSING THEIR EXPERIENCES, WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE THEM TO DO THAT
- Yeah they have, a lot of former players / current players are in a difficult situation, they don't want to be seen as rocking boat / hopefully yesterday shows them that it's fine
Q: IT SHOULDN'T BE LIKE THAT SHOULD IT
- Well no it shouldn't and that again shows institutional racism / the fear of the institution is so much / the clubs try and use the players that are there how great it is / I know as part of the investigation a 16 or 17 year olds mum wrote a letter of support for Yorkshire / the club should never have put her in that position / the institution need to listen and people should feel empowered
Q: YOU'VE ALWAYS SAID IT'S NOT ABOUT INDIVIDUALS, ABOUT CULTURE, BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK SHOULD HAPPEN TO INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE GUILTY
- People who apologise should get second chance but should be some level of accountability / clear message needs to be sent out that this is not okay and if you do it there's going to be repercussions / people in denial the authorities should come down hard on them
Q: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THOSE WHO ARE IN DENIAL ABOUT THE IMPACT THEIR BEHAVIOUR HAD ON YOU PERSONALLY
- This is what I've wanted to do from the offset, I wanted Yorkshire to get in a room with me so I could tell them how so called little things...
