World-famous French city of Avignon takes visitors on a journey through time
AVIGNON, FRANCE - JULY 24, 2023: Avignon province of France has a rich cultural and historical heritage that makes the city an important tourist destination.
The city, located in the southeastern France, has many landmarks such as the Palais des Papes and the Notre-Dame-des-Doms cathedral.
In the 14th century, when Avignon was the papal residence, the Palais des Papes was the palace where the popes ruled the Christian world.
The Palais des Papes, an austere-looking castle lavishly decorated by Simone Martini and Matteo Giovanetti, has since dominated the city, the surrounding ramparts and the remains of a 12th-century bridge over the Rhone.
UNESCO has listed the historic center of Avignon as a World Heritage Site, especially the Palais des Papes, the episcopal complex, the Notre-Dame-des-Doms cathedral, the Petit Palais Museum and Saint-Benezet Bridge (Avignon Bridge).
