Damascus markets bustle as Syrians mark 1st Ramadan in post-Assad era

DAMASCUS, SYRIA - FEB. 25, 2025: As Syrians observe their first Ramadan in the post-Assad era, markets in Damascus are bustling with shoppers eager to prepare for the holy month, marking a significant shift in the country’s atmosphere. Footage on Tuesday, Feb. 25, captures the lively atmosphere, with Syrians navigating the crowded stalls, selecting fresh produce, spices, and other traditional goods. The Bab Sraijeh Bazaar, one of the oldest and most popular markets in Damascus, saw a surge in shoppers eager to stock up on food and essentials for the upcoming sacred month. Bashar Assad, Syria’s leader for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia after anti-regime groups took control of Damascus on Dec. 8, ending the Baath Party’s regime, which had been in power since 1963. This will be the nation's first Ramadan after Assad's rule. Ramadan is a time for fasting, worship, and spiritual renewal for Muslims. From dawn until sunset, Muslims refrain from food, drink, and worldly distractions, with the aim of deepening their connection to Allah and purifying their hearts. Beyond fasting, Ramadan emphasizes charity, sharing, and helping those in need. Special prayers, Iftar meals with family, and acts of generosity strengthen community bonds and deepen spiritual connection. This year, Ramadan will begin on Saturday, March 1, 2025, and end on Saturday, March 29. As always, the holy month will conclude with the festive celebration of Eid al-Fitr.
