Aerial view of Vienna City Hall, Aerial view of Rathaus in Vienna, Aerial view of Rathausplatz, The "Rathausmann" statue at the top of the Rathaus (City Hall) tower in Vienna, Aerial view of Theseustempel Vienna, Aerial view of Volksgarten in Vienna Vienna City Hall (German: Wiener Rathaus) is the headquarters of Vienna's local government, located on Rathausplatz in the Innere Stadt district. Built in neo-Gothic style from 1872 to 1883 according to plans designed by Friedrich von Schmidt, the building houses the Mayor of Vienna's office, as well as city council chambers and the Vienna Landtag assembly. The Theseus Temple was built between 1819 and 1823 by court architect Peter von Nobile. It was designed to house a single work of contemporary art: Antonio Canova’s white marble masterpiece Theseus Slaying the Centaur. For almost seventy years this artwork stood alone inside the building, until in 1890 it was moved to the newlycompleted Kunsthistorisches Museum, where it remains today on the museum’s monumental staircase.
