China Wins Safe Environment's Individual Race At Int'l Army Games

KORLA, CHINA - AUGUST 25: Aerial shots of national flags of participating countries and armored vehicles in race on August 25, 2021 in Korla, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. The Chinese team won top honors in the Safe Environment's individual race at the International Army Games 2021 in Korla of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Wednesday. The "Safe Environment" individual race tests the servicemen's capabilities to cope with nuclear, biological, and chemical threats. It involves two 3.75-kilometer closed tracks, dotted with vehicle obstacles, and personnel obstacles. Before it starts, each of the three-member teams enter a chamber, to test the air tightness of their equipment. Inside the vehicle, the crew members don gas masks and suits, which limit their vision and breathing. It's a great test of their driving and survival skills, as they need to overcome the obstacles at a high speed. There are five participating countries battling for top honors in the games: China, Russia, Belarus, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. They all drive the China-made Warrior SUVs, with a maximum speed of 120 kilometers per hour. Along the way, contestants have to get out of the vehicles and carry out tasks, like identifying toxic substances, and detecting sources of radiation. (Footage by CCTV+ via Getty Images)
