Protest against Egypt's al-Sisi in Austrian capital
VIENNA, AUSTRIA - JULY 05: Activists stage a protest against Egypt's President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in the 7th year of the military coup on July 05, 2020 in Vienna, Austria.
The protesters gathered in front of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna the flags of Egypt and Rabia, as well as holding signs, banners reading such as "no support for Europe and the US to the killer regime in Egypt", "No knock-in Egypt, General Sisi is killing the people".
Speaking at the demonstration organized by the Egyptian Coordination Board, Austrian activist Michael Pröbsting said that General Sisi, who seized power in Egypt in 2013 with a bloody coup, arrested the first President of the country, democratically elected President Mursi and tens of thousands of people.
Stating that the Egyptian people have been facing oppression, fear, and economic problems for 7 years, Pröbsting said. General Sisi is not only a danger for the Egyptian people but also freedom in Libya. He also said el-Sisi aims to put the struggling people under pressure by threatening them with their army.
Mohamed Morsi won the first post-revolution presidential election in 2012, becoming the country’s first democratically elected civilian president and fifth president of the republic.
On June 30, 2013, and on the first anniversary of Morsi’s assumption of the presidency -- amid persuasion from the local media -- major protests erupted against him mainly in Cairo’s Tahrir Square and in other cities in which demonstrators demanded that Morsi step down as president.
On Aug. 14, 2013, more than a thousand people were killed when security forces violently cleared sit-ins in Cairo’s Nahda and Rabaa al-Adawiya squares, sparking nationwide protests.
After resigning as defense minister, Sisi won presidential elections with 96.9% of the vote in polls that took place for three days starting on May 26, 2014, that was marred by widespread irregularities. (Footage by /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
