Sun Sets On Luxury Sleeper Train Bound For Hokkaido

About 2,000 wistful railway fans gathered at JR Ueno Station in Tokyo’s Taito Ward on March 19 , 2016 in Tokyo , Japan ,to bid farewell to the Cassiopeia sleeper train as it left on its last run for Sapporo in Hokkaido. Debuted in 1999, the luxurious train offered all private berths in its double-decked carriages and maintained an 80-percent passenger capacity during its years of operation. Service has come to an end because the train will no longer be able to pass through the undersea Seikan Tunnel that connects Honshu with Hokkaido from March 26 when the Hokkaido Shinkansen bullet trains start operations.
