This image shows the basic structure of simple columnar epithelium with tall columnar cells, with nuclei, that attach to an underlying basement membrane. At the top of the cell facing the lumen, the dark staining structure are INTERCELLULAR JUNCTIONS called DESMOSOMES. Desmosomes bind cells together by means of "spot welds" between cell membranes. Below the basement membrane is supporting connecting tissue also showing blood vessels.
