The imposing Aragonese Castle ( Castello Aragonese D'Ischia ) on the island of Ischia, in the Campania region of Italy. The castle stands on a volcanic rocky islet that connects to the larger island of Ischia by a causeway (Ponte Aragonese). With a long history, the first castle was built by Hiero I of Syracuse in 474 BC. Ischia is one of the Phlegraean Islands (Isole Flegree ) - an volcanic archipelago in the Gulf of Naples and the Campania region of southern Italy. Other islands in the group are the islands of Procida, Vivara, and Nisida. ( The island of Capri, although very close to Ischia, is not usually considered to be included in the Phlegraean Islands. ) Ischia is a popular destination for its mineral-rich thermal waters, which have been used for their health benefits since ancient times.
