STOMACH--MUCOSA, GASTRIC GLANDS, GASTRIC PITS, PARIETAL CELLS. CHIEF CELLS, MUCOUS CELLS, 100X. The Gastric Pits are near the top of the image which also shows the simple columnar epithelium and mucous cells that secrete mucus. The Gastric Glands are in the lower half of the image. The Gastric Glands are composed of Parietal Cells (plump cells, with a more reddish cytoplasm) that secrete Hydrochloric Acid (HCl) and Intrinsic Factor that is necessary for Vitamin B 12 absorption. The Gastric Glands also have Chief Cells that secrete digestive enzymes (e.g. Pepsinogen that is converted to Pepsin, that digests proteins). . This is the fundic part of the stomach.
