A Somali and a Chinese man bargain about a bag of myrrh resin in Bosaso, Puntland. - stock photo
Myrrh is the aromatic oleoresin of a number of small, thorny tree species of the genus Commiphora, which grow in dry, stony soil. Myrrh resin is a natural gum. Myrrh gum is commonly harvested from the species Commiphora myrrha, which is native to Yemen, Somalia, Eritrea and eastern Ethiopia. Myrrh is used in medicine, e.g. as an antiseptic. Because of its mention in New Testament, myrrh is an incense offered during Christian liturgical celebrations.
