Sakalava tomb - stock photo
Sakalava funeral tomb, in Madagascar. Sakalava people are significant cattle herders and the number of cattle is a sign of wealth as in many parts of mainland Africa today. As is the culture of this Malagasy tribal group, all the zebu cattle of the deceased particularly if they are wealthy, are slaughtered and their skulls placed on the tomb as a sign of their wealth. One Sakalava king is reputed to have had a tomb with over 500 zebu skulls on it!
