Road sign warning of panthers, in Everglades National Park. - stock photo

Everglades National Park, Florida, U.S.A. - February 14, 2013: The Florida panther is an endangered subspecies of cougar. The deforestation and spread of development brought on by European settlers were the original cause of the decline in their numbers. In the 1970s, there were only approximately 20 left in the wild. Today their numbers have increased to an estimated 200 in the wild. Today, panthers live in the forests and swamps of South Florida, and these cats can be found in pinelands and mixed swamp forests.
