Oregon Grapes, Mahonia aquifolium, Berberis aquifolium, Barbery, Oregon Grape-Holly - stock photo
The fruits are not actually grapes. Oregon-grapes are species of flowering plant, in the family of Berberidaceae. It's a shrub that grows to 3 feet tall with spiny leathery leaves that resemble holly. Clusters of dense yellow flowers appear in late spring followed by clusters of blue purplish berries. It's native to Western North America.
The root of the plant is said to have medicinal use for gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD) and use for psoriasis and as disinfectant.
The Oregon-grape flower is Oregon's state flower.
