EPIDERMIS of the skin showing 5 Layers, Palm, 50X - stock photo
EPIDERMIS of the skin showing 5 Layers, Palm, 50X. This image shows quite nicely, the five layers of the epidermis (stratum: corneum, lucidum, granulosum, spinosum and basale (germinativum or basal cell layer). The thickest layer is the stratum corneum consisting of dead keratinized cells that provide protection and eventually slough off. Cell multiplication takes place in the stratum basale and basal cell carcinomas take their origin in this layer. Pigments like melanin are located in the stratum granulosum. This photomicrograph also shows two Meissner's Corpuscles (touch or tactile receptors) located in the dermis just below the epidermis.
