ANATOMY of the SKIN--EPIDERMIS (Keratinized, thick), DERMIS, SUBCUTANEOUS LAYER (HYPODERMIS), 25X. The EPIDERMIS shows the: Stratum corneum, Stratum granulosum, Stratum spinosum, and the Stratum basale (basal cell layer, also Stratum Germinitivum). The basal layer is quite dark and contains dark cells called Melanocytes that produce a dark, protective pigment called melanin. A sweat gland duct (pink) is also evident in the stratum corneum. The DERMIS is mostly composed of Irregular Dense Connective Tissue (mostly collagen). The SUBCUTANEOUS LAYER (HYPODERMIS) shows an abundance of Adipose Tissue (fat cells), and numerous Sweat Glands. The Epidermis is Stratified Squamous Epithelium.
