TRANSITIONAL EPITHELIUM, lining the URINARY BLADDER, 100X - stock photo
TRANSITIONAL EPITHELIUM, lining the URINARY BLADDER, 100X. Transitional Epithelium lines the organs of the Urinary System--e.g. bladder, ureter. The cells near the surface can vary in appearance relating to the degree of distension, for example, when the bladder fills with a good amount of urine. When stretched the surface cells flatten. Normally when the bladder does not contain much urine, the superficial cells are more rounded or dome shaped as in this image. This tissue then is very adaptable to stretching.
