Lehman Caves - Great Basin National Park - Nevada, USA - Cave Popcorn - stock photo
A more common name for this Speleothem or cave formation is Cave Popcorn. Cave popcorn, or coralloids, are small nodes of calcite, aragonite or gypsum that form on surfaces in caves, especially limestone caves. The Lehman caves were discovered in the 1880s. Before National Park Service took control of the caves in this park in 1933, much damaged has been done by operators and visitors. Today, they remain protected as part of Great Basin National Park.
