PANETH CELLS (cells with red granules) in an INTESTINAL GLAND of the SMALL INTESTINE 250X - stock photo
PANETH CELLS (cells with red granules) in an INTESTINAL GLAND (also called Crypts of Lieberkuhn) of the SMALL INTESTINE (ileum) 250X. Paneth Cells have large eosinophilic (red) granules in their cytoplasm, and in this image are located at the base of an intestinal gland. These granules contain anti-microbial chemicals (like lysozyme) that may have some function in host-defense and possibly immune functions. These chemicals are secreted into the lumen of the intestinal gland. This image also shows columnar epithelial cells that secrete intestinal juice, and goblet cells that secrete mucus. H & E stain.
