GREEN (PHOTOSYNTHETIC) PLANT CELLS WITH CHLOROPLASTS---CELL IN CENTER SHOWS A NUCLEUS, 200X. This image shows basic PLANT CELL STRUCTURE. CELL WALLS are very prominent. The plasma membrane which lies inside the cell wall is not visible. The CHLOROPLASTS bear a green pigment CHLOROPHYLL which is of primary importance in capturing sunlight and in manufacturing carbohydrates like glucose by utilizing Carbon Dioxide and Water in the complex process we call PHOTOSYNTHESIS. The VACUOLE is not clearly defined but is represented by the large clear spaces in all of the cells. This image was taken from Elodea, an aquatic fresh water plant. Biology students frequently use this plant to learn how to use a microscope in observing living biological specimens by making a wet mount on a microscope slide.
