Eared Dove (Zenaida auriculata) - stock photo

It has a brown back, a head with two black lateral stripes and black spots on the wings. In addition to its size, another characteristic capable of identifying it is the two small black stripes behind its eyes, forming as if they were ears (origin of the Latin name auriculata = with ears). The eyes are surrounded by bluish skin. On the wings, the black balls are also striking. It flies very fast, with changes in height and in zigzags, unlike other doves. This species of dove can measure up to 25 centimeters in length. Intermediate in size between a dove and a pigeon, it can only be confused with the juritis (genus Leptotila), but unlike these, it does not occur in forests and woodlands, being strictly rural. The male has a bluish head and his neck, when illuminated by sunlight, shows pink and blue spots to attract the female during mating season, when he displays himself by filling his neck. In the female, the head is a brownish, reddish tone, with the neck having a yellowish and greenish tone when the sunlight illuminates it. However, outside the breeding season, the feather colors of both sexes are practically identical, with no sexual dimorphism.
