Distillery of ylang-ylang in Mayotte - stock photo
Mayotte - June 2017. Ylang-ylang essential oil is being extracted from flowers in a traditional distillery in Mayotte island (France).
Ylangs-ylangs 'Cananga odorata' are originated from Asia and have been introduced in the Indian Ocean by Pierre Poivre. The essential oil is known to be afrodisiac. From the second half of the 90s Jean-Paul Guerlain has exploited hectares Ylang-ylangs plantations for its cosmetics and fragrance business.
During this long process, the wood fire has to be maintained constantly to keep the still vat at the right temperature and recover the valuable fraction of the distillate.
