Crowded world... caterpillars race to the top - stock photo
These Polydamas caterpillars have eaten the Aristolochia all the way to the top of the stem. Now they are all meeting and I wonder what comes next. Apparently their society is not too different from ours.A couple of months ago I bought a Giant Aristolochia. I have been watching it grow but have not seen any Polydamas butterflies fluttering around it. It is their host plant so that is why I wanted it to grow in our Jungle. Obviously they have been there when I was not looking. Today I noticed large holes in the leaves and turned one of them over to discover this profusion of caterpillars. Clearly lots more Polydamas butterflies are on the way.
