Corn Snake from the Lower Florida Keys - stock photo
A sub-adult Corn Snake (Elaphe guttata) from the Lower Florida Keys (Sugarloaf Key). The animal was found at night crossing a rural road. Individuals from the Lower Keys exhibit less black pigment and are naturally more hypomelanistic than their mainland or Upper Keys counterparts. They are protected by the state of Florida as a unique population threatened by development. They used to be considered a unique subspecies, Rosey Ratsnake (Elaphe guttata rosacea).
