Bone Cells--OSTEOBLASTS & OSTEOCYTES, Developing Bone in the Epiphyseal Disk (Growth Plate) of a long bone, 50X. This image shows: Osteocytes (bone cells) and the Lacunae (space within the newly formed bone (red) where the osteocytes reside, some of the clear spaces that you see with the osteocytes), Osteoblasts (bone-forming cells) especially abundant along the surface of the newly formed bone (look at the surface cells on red and purple bony spicule in the lower left hand corner of the image). This image also shows: calcified cartilage (purple), mesenchyme and proliferation of new cartilage cells (top of image). All of this activity is in the Epiphyseal Disk (Growth Plate) of a Developing long bone and is referred to as Endochondral Ossification. This bone was originally all Hyaline Cartilage--much of this cartilage is replaced with bone.
