LIVERWORT SEXUAL REPRODUCTION--Archegoniophores which have Archegonia that contain eggs, Marchantia polymorpha - stock photo
LIVERWORT SEXUAL REPRODUCTION--Archegoniophores (the stalked umbrella-shaped structures) which have many Archegonia, each one of which contains an egg. These are female gametophyte (gamete producing) plants. Male plants have antheridia that produce sperm which can be dispersed to female plants via rain drops (splash mechanism). With moist conditions the sperm swim into the archegonia and fertilize the egg--this fertilized egg develops into a sporophyte that produces asexual spores that can produce new liverwort plants. This is alternation of generations--the gametophyte (gamete producing plants) alternating with a sporophyte (spore producing plant). This species grows well in greenhouses, and is found on soil or wet rocks in nature. Marchantia polymorpha, Michigan
