SMOOTH MUSCLE and SEROSA of the SMALL INTESTINE (Jejunum) 200X - stock photo
SMOOTH MUSCLE and SEROSA of the SMALL INTESTINE (Jejunum), 200X. The smooth muscle has a circular layer which is below the outer longitudinal layer (smooth muscle cells are cut in cross section). The boundaries of the smooth muscle cells and nuclei are very evident in the circular layer. The smooth muscle layers make up the muscularis coat or tunic of the intestine that promotes peristalsis. Also shown is the serosa above the longitudinal layer with the mesothelium (simple squamous epithelium) at the surface. H & E stain.
