The layered nature reminds one of an onion. In the core a sensory neuron fiber (a dendrite) is evident--it leaves the corpuscle sending sensory (afferent) nerve impulses to the central nervous system when the receptor is stimulated by heavy pressure or they may also be involved in detection of vibrations.
