Tanzania - Mtwara - Production line in a cashew factory
Women peel and grade cashew nuts by hand at a large processing factory in Mtwara, which employs 2,400 women. The pods are steamed, then the nut is removed with a special foot-operated cutting device. The factory is run by an Indian company called Olam which is the world's largest supplier of raw cashew nuts with around 25% market share of the current global trade in these popular nuts. The workers are paid by the weight of the nuts they process and this works out at approximately $1.80 per day. At this point the entire factory was packing organic cashews for the European market. Although wages are low Olam generates employment in rural areas where no other work is available. (Photo by Gideon Mendel/Corbis via Getty Images)
