King Cotton's Ransom
William J. Dowdell of the New York Cotton Exchange, is shown with his hand raised as he auctions off the first bale of the new crop. King Cotton was priced at $52.50 a bale or eleven cents a pound compared with $30 a bale in 1928 and $100 a bale in 1929.
