vethealth_paloalto16_104_mac.jpg Physical Therapy, Miller uses a Dynamometer to test his hand strength to see how his progress is coming along. After suffering a traumatic brain injury in Iraq, Sgt. Brett Miller with the National Guard spent several weeks being treated at Walter Reed before he was transferred to the VA medical center at Palo Alto. The differences between the two places are shocking, he says -- at Walter Reed he was basically an outpatient, despite the fact he could barely walk or talk. He's been an inpatient at Palo Alto's traumatic brain injury unit for six months and is getting intensive treatment. Among the more interesting therapies -- he's taken up competitive mountain-bike racing, despite the fact that he can barely pedal. Photographed in, Palo Alto, Ca, on 3/15/07.
