Message From Mars

Three Washington scientists study a piece of film which appears to have captured radio signals from space, 1924. Having obtained the co-operation of the US Government in observing terrestrial radio silence (on 'National Radio Silence Day'), the three men used the Jenkins Radio-Camera to record a signal from Mars, during the planet's closest approach to earth. From left to right, inventor and pioneer of cinema Charles Francis Jenkins (1867 - 1934), army cryptographer William F. Friedman (1891 - 1969) and Dr David Peck Todd (1855 - 1939), professor emeritus of astronomy at Amherst College. (Photo by Henry Miller News Picture Service/FPG/Getty Images)
