Bunker's Hill
17th June 1775: The Battle of Bunker Hill, the first large-scale engagement of the American War of Independence, during which American troops fortified Breed's Hill, Charlestown, in order to force out the British from Boston. The British advanced on the hill under the cover of naval guns and eventually re-captured both Breed's and Bunker Hill, burning Charlestown to the ground in the process.
