circa 1880: Sitting Bull (circa 1834 - 1890). Native American chief of Dakota Sioux, in the Sioux War 1876 - 1877, led the defeat of General Custer and 266 men of the US Army Seventh Cavalry, on June 25, 1876, at the Little Big Horn, Montana. Escaped to Canada, surrendered in 1881. Toured with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, returned to his people, killed by Indian police while resisting arrest. (Photo by Hulton Archive/Getty Images)
