A Rusty Parrotfish (Scarus ferrugineus )

Sharm El-Sheikh, EGYPT: A Rusty Parrotfish (Scarus ferrugineus ) is seen in the depth of Ras Mohammed protection area near Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, 05 July 2005. Parrotfish owe their name to their teeth which are joined in a structure similar to a beak and to the brilliant colours of their skin. Most of them feed on the thin layer of algae which covers the corals, scraping off part of these latter as well and making an unmistakable noise. These fish are characteristically diurnal and swim alone or in small groups. The Red Sea , enclosed by 2000 kilometres of coast line in between the Arabic peninsula and the African continent, is one of the most fascinating natural environments of the world. Its waters are populated by an incredible variety of beautiful fish, shell fish, coral reefs and invertebrates, many of which are endemic and live only in this environment.
