Pneumocystis jirovecii, formerly known as Pneumocystis carinii, is present in this lung impression smear, using Giemsa stain, 1971. Pneumocystis jirovecii, is found in the environment, as well as in the lungs of healthy humans and animals, causing disease in immunosuppressed individuals, and is arguably the most important cause of pneumonia in the immunocompromised host.
