pix of award winner ettie dawkins. since 1996, through her not-for-profit organization the Applause Insitute, dawkins has organized the cotillion ball, an annual event that highlights months of training in social graces for young black menand women. in 1988, after hurricane gilbert ravaged her native jamaica, she used her fashion connections to stage a show, raising over $20000 for relief efforts. she was one of canada's tope black models in the 1970's and started her own fashion boutique and quit her modlling career. she now devotes her time volunteering.
