He is depicted in full in a spacious classicist room, which is closed at the front by an arch with a green curtain taken up to the left. He sits to the right of a table, turned three-quarters to the left, head to the right and looking at the viewer. He wears a short white wig, a black skirt, calf pants and a lace tie and cuffs. He rests the right hand, in which he holds a pen, on a half-written sheet of paper, which is lying next to some books, a well and a snuff box on the table covered with a green cloth. The books, one of which has been opened and shows a picture with a muscle image and of which three are on the left in the foreground next to the table, carry the names of G. van Swieten, Sydenham and Hippocrates. Between the books is another print with the portraits of Aesculapius, Hippocrates, Galenus and Ha p. various (?). To the right in the foreground is a dog, more to the rear on a green pedestal is a bronze statue depicting a figure wrapped in heavy robes, with a protractor in the left hand and a staff around which a ribbon of ... orum magistra. In front of a pilaster against the back wall is a putto with a lictor beam. Above a weapon with an anchor placed at an angle to the right. Not signed.
