The 50-year history of the United Press, as documented in a new book, Deadline Every Minute, by Joe Alex Morris, published November 4th, contains many journalistic anecdotes. Here, frank H. Bartholomew (third from left, now U. P.'s President, directs the coverage of the Santa Barbara, California, earthquake of June 29th, 1925. Morris' book describes the growth of the wire service, which celebrated its golden anniversary in June, from its founding by newspaper titan E. W. Scripps.
