Nevio, 49, hammers chicken filets prior to cook cotoletta, hand breaded chicken escalope, in the kitchen of the Italian family run cafe E. Pellicci, in east London, on June 3, 2025. Opened 125 years ago by Anna Pellicci's grandparents, the family-owned and run cafe E. Pellicci went from being the breakfast place of the gangsters the Kray brothers to an East End institution where cockney accent meets Italian heritage with customers coming from the neighbourhood but also from all over the word.
"The menu has changed a bit, before it was only British, but with time we have introduced some Italian recipes, but not too much. As we say : ain't broken don't fix it" explained Anna Pellici who manages the restaurant with her brother Nevio. "We start preparing the food at 7am, before with my husband it was 4am" told Maria Pellici. A bit after 7:30 Nevio's daughters and wife arrive for breakfast "When we were little we would come here every morning for breakfast and every evening for dinner with all the family." remembered Nevio and Anna. On the wall pictures of the grandparents and the whole family are displayed. "Nonna (granny in english) started to buy one panel of wood at a time in 1946 from an Italian artisan living here behind Achille Capacci, now they are listed by the English Heritage". Once the doors open at 8am its a bustle of customers. Michelle 39, lives in the neighbourhood "I used to come here everyday when i was living next door, now a bit less. I love this place there is a feeling of family". (Photo by Ben STANSALL / AFP) (Photo by BEN STANSALL/AFP via Getty Images)
