5/23/00, Minneapolis. Jason Lowe places scaffolding around the "Spoonbridge and Cherry" sculpture in preparation for sanding and painting the sculpture. Every five years Walker Art Center polishes its silver _ or at least cleans up the ``Spoonbridge and Cherry'' sculpture by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. Museum staff erected a scaffolding around the 1988 sculpture Tuesday in the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. They plan to start sanding the stainless steel-and-aluminum cherry today (ie, Wednesday) and will finish repainting the sculpture next week. Minor cracks in the spoon's handle also will be repaired.
