View of Microscopic View of Influenza
(Original Caption) "Isolated and photographed for the first time, the deadly influenza virus is shown here in a microphotograph made by the University of Pennsylvania on an electron-Microscope. The tiny grey dots are the dread virus. About four millionths of an inch in diameter, they are pictured with the long tube shaped tobacco mosaic virus for comparison. The black mark was made by an invisible particle of dust. This specimen of the deadly virus was taken from an influenza victim who died three years ago. The virus is not a microbe, but a molecule, a bit of protein that is one of the tiniest disease agents known to science. Although not a living thing, the molecule is able to reproduce itself when in living thing and opens the way for development of vaccines with which to combat the flu.
