A feature story for the diabetes series. This story will look at the newest science about why some people may be more likely than others to get diabetes. Researchers think it has to do with epigenetic changes of our genome. These changes can be made from diet, stress, exposure to environmental toxins, and one of the most critical times these changes can happen is during pregnancy. There is mounting evidence to show that what a pregnany mom does -- the food she eats, the stress she experiences -- can alter the epigenome of her unborn baby.
